i sat on the curb­ing that
sur­rounded a dirt square
in a denny’s park­ing lot

i saw a snail crawl­ing slow
trekking his way toward me
with his anten­nae searching

i extended a sin­gle fin­ger
out towards him and his body
strained upward to meet it

i pulled away just before we
touched — to me it sig­ni­fied
heaven and earth — to me it
sig­ni­fied everything
