Hi-res of “DASH! Promo #1” | Hi-res of “DASH! Face On Fire” | DASH! LIVE AND UNCUT
About
A highly improvised show, seeing DASH! is always a sound event. Putting together layers of silence and melody, rhythm and drone, sadness and celebration, violist Jordan Dykstra makes a big sound by putting little pieces together. Not unlike imagining John Cale covering Stars of the Lid in Jon Brion’s living room.

“Jordan Dykstra (of Marriage Recs fame) plucks and bows his viola, the latter in both long, sweeping strokes and those short, super-fast, frantic bursts. It’s that variety, and the fact that the orchestral swells don’t completely pussify Mees’ delightfully in-your-face approach, that makes it work. Unfortunately, a lot of bands in search of that full sound (ahem, Mates of State) have let the inclusion of strings dull ‘em down, ultimately detracting from the hooks and punch their pop music’s built on. Not Mees and the Grown Children, though. Oh no.”
– Amy McCullough reviewing “Bees” by Jared Mees and the Grown Children for the Willamette Week
“…Keal sticks mostly to simple rhyming couplets that echo his guitar’s strum. This strategy works well on album highlight “Spittle,” which includes the bizarrely touching line “My life’s hanging on by the spittle on your lips” and Jordan Dykstra’s elegant viola work.”
– J.Bowers’ review of Small Sur in the Baltimore City Paper
“I got my eye on you, kid.”
– Jona Bechtolt (Yacht)
“Mind melting viola work.”
– Adam Forkner (White Rainbow)
“You are the next Van Dyke Parks.”
– Matthew Muschiana (Recorder)
